Are you headed to Cloudcroft in New Mexico and are looking for the best hiking trails in the area? Then I’ve got you covered!
Cloudcroft is one of my favorite places in New Mexico. It’s got a cute town center that looks like it’s out of a Wild West movie, friendly locals, a mild climate, and amazing trails.
If you don’t know the area, it can be hard to plan your hiking without a lot of research. Since we live in the area, I thought I would create a useful guide to hiking trails in Cloudcroft.
Let’s get to it!
1. Osha Trail
Trailhead: Osha Trail T10, Sacramento Ranger District
Length: 2.2 miles
Level: Beginner
Duration: 1 hour
The Osha Loop Trail in Cloudcroft is pretty easy to complete, it takes about an hour. You’ll navigate some hilly terrain, and good shoes are recommended. It is my favorite hiking trail in Cloudcroft.
We completed the hike within a little more than an hour because there was a lot of snow on the ground. You’ll wander through the beautiful Lincoln National Forest.
The highlight of the trail is the stunning viewpoint, from where you can see the White Sands National Park and the Tularosa Basin.
All in all, the trail has an elevation change of about 400 feet. Luckily, there are quite a few benches along the way for a good rest.
The trail is a loop, and it is easy to find. There are helpful trail markers along the way.
2. Cloud Climbing Trestle Trail
Trailhead: Cloud-Climbing Trestle Trail (T5001) near Trestle Recreation Area
Length: 1.3 miles (one way)
Level: Easy – Intermediate
Duration: 1.5 hours
The Cloud Climbing Trestle Trail in Cloudcroft, New Mexico, is a scenic and historic hike at the same time.
I love it for the breathtaking views, but also because it offers a glimpse into the past of the area.
This easy-to-moderate trail leads to the iconic Mexican Canyon Trestle. It is a stunning wooden structure from the early 1900s that once supported the Alamogordo and Sacramento Mountain Railway.
The trail is surrounded by pine and aspen forests, and it is beautiful year-round. There is quite some incline in the hike, which can be a bit steep for beginners.
We often see deer and other wildlife here, so keep your eyes open!
3. Rim Trail
Trailhead: Rim Trail (T105)
Length: 31.2 miles
Level: Difficult (if you hike the entire trail)
Duration: Depends
The Rim Trail near Cloudcroft is a stunning and peaceful hiking trail that will lead you to the Sunspot Observatory.
The trail offers incredible views of the Sacramento Mountains and the Tularosa Basin. It is definitely one of my favorites!
The entire trail is about 31 miles in total. However, the trail is divided into multiple sections, so you can easily customize it for short or long hikes depending on your preference.
We found the trail never too busy, and usually you can see some cute wildlife there as well!
If you are planning on hiking the entire trail, make sure to bring water and snacks – since you can’t buy anything underway.
Btw: the trail is super beautiful in fall, with lots of stunning aspen trees!
4. Bridal Veil Falls Trail
Trailhead: Bridal Veil Falls Trail (T129) (Grandview Trail)
Length: 3.2 miles (round trip)
Level: Easy – Moderate
Duration: 1.5 hours
The Bridal Veil Falls Trail hike is a little outside of Cloudcroft, in the village of High Rolls.
It is a beautiful and family-friendly hike that leads to a picturesque waterfall tucked into the Sacramento Mountains.
The trail is about 3.2 miles round trip, with a moderate difficulty level due to some elevation changes and rocky terrain. We thought it wasn’t that hard to manage, but it is not ideal for beginners.
The waterfall at the end is so pretty – and definitely worth the hike.
5. Switchback Trail
Trailhead: Switchback Trail (T5004)
Length: 3.2 miles (one way)
Level: Moderate
Duration: 2 hours
The Switchback Trail starts almost in the same place as the Cloud Climbing Trestle Trail.
It is a scenic hike with lots of switchbacks (as the name already suggests) that will lead you down the mountain toward the Bailey Canyon. The hike is about 3.2 miles one way.
There are lots of signs that explain the historical significance of the Mexican Canyon Railroad Trestle and the rest of the area. It is a great way to hike and learn at the same time.
Best Time To Go Hiking in Cloudcroft
The best time to go hiking in Cloudcroft depends on what kind of experience you’re looking for. We have been there throughout the year, and there is no truly bad time to go.
But I have made a short overview of the best time to hit the trails per season:
Spring (March to May):
- Why Go: Mild temperatures and blooming wildflowers make spring a fantastic time to hit the trails. The waterfalls, like on Bridal Veil Falls Trail, are often more vibrant due to snowmelt.
- What to Know: It can still be chilly in the mornings, so dress in layers.
Summer (June to August):
- Why Go: Escape the desert heat! Cloudcroft’s high elevation keeps it cool and pleasant, even in the summer. Trails like the Rim Trail offer shaded paths through lush forests.
- What to Know: Afternoon thunderstorms are common, so plan your hikes for earlier in the day.
Fall (September to November):
- Why Go: Crisp air, colorful foliage, and fewer crowds make fall the most picturesque time to hike. Trails like Osha Trail become even more magical with golden aspens lining the way.
- What to Know: Temperatures start to drop, especially in late fall, so bring warm layers.
Winter (December to February):
- Why Go: Quiet trails and snow-dusted landscapes offer a peaceful hiking experience. Popular trails, like the Cloud Climbing Trestle Trail, look like a winter wonderland.
- What to Know: Snow and ice can make trails slippery, so wear appropriate footwear and check trail conditions.
For the best overall experience, late spring and fall are ideal for perfect weather, vibrant scenery, and fewer weather-related challenges. My personal favorite time is fall because the colors are so magical!
Conclusion
Cloudcroft has some of the best hiking trails in New Mexico, and each one offers something special. To not overwhelm you, I have only chosen to present my five favorite trails in this post.
