Does it Snow in Arizona in Winter?
Arizona does get snow in the winter, but it’s mostly in higher elevations.
Places like Flagstaff, the White Mountains, and the Grand Canyon’s North Rim usually see several feet of snow.
In Prescott and Sedona, you might see lighter snowfall. Sadly, it also melts quickly. It does create a stunning contrast to the red rocks for sure.
Southern Arizona, like Tucson and Phoenix, rarely gets snow. Luckily, the nearby mountain ranges (like Mount Lemmon) sometimes do. So you don’t have to give up on your dreams of snow even when visiting Southern Arizona.
Here is a bit of an overview of how many inches of snow you can expect on average:

Weather in Arizona in Winter
The weather in Arizona in winter is pretty hard to describe. Typically, it varies a lot depending on the region.
In northern areas like Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon, temperatures can drop below freezing. This is where you’ll often see heavy snowfall.
Southern Arizona (Phoenix and Tucson), stays mild and mostly snow-free. They have daytime temperatures of around 60°F to 70°F. The desert areas stay cool at night.
Ski resorts in the north attract winter sports enthusiasts. The warm southern regions are perfect for people looking for a break from harsh winter.
I have created a bit of an overview of what you can expect temperature-wise in Arizona in the winter months:
Best Ski Resorts in Arizona
Arizona has three major ski resorts. Most of the other areas in the state are not ideal for skiing, so you’ll have to stick to these if you are looking for winter sports fun in Arizona.
Here are the best ski resorts in Arizona:
1. Arizona Snowbowl: This cool ski resort is located near Flagstaff. It has over 700 acres of skiable terrain. It has a good range of slopes for all levels and fantastic views of the surrounding mountains.
2. Sunrise Park Resort: You can find this one in the White Mountains. The resort offers three mountains with plenty of skiing and snowboarding slopes. It’s family-friendly with both beginner and advanced slopes.
3. Mount Lemmon Ski Valley: This one is close to Tucson, and it is the southernmost ski area in the U.S. It’s smaller but has a unique charm. It is cool because you can get a quick escape from the desert heat.
Best Winter Travel Destinations in Arizona
Tucson
Tucson is perfect for escaping the cold in winter – while still having access to some slopes.
Tucson stays warm in the winter, so you don’t have to pack too much winter clothes.
You can enjoy beautiful desert hikes and visit Saguaro National Park – all without the crowds of summer.
And if you are still feeling like hitting the ski slopes you can drive up Mount Lemmon – and have winter wonderland right at your doorstep.

Sedona
Sedona is always worth a visit – and especially in winter.
The red rocks look stunning with a dusting of snow and you can enjoy the peaceful atmosphere without crowds.
Winter in Sedona is cooler, but still mild enough for hiking and outdoor adventures.
The contrast of red rocks and white snow makes it incredibly picturesque and peaceful – perfect for these Instagram-shots!

Grand Canyon North Rim
If you ask me the North Rim is the best part of Grand Canyon, and I’d pick it over the South Rim any day. But especially in winter, it is extra cool (pun intended).
A winter visit to the North Rim is magical. But keep in mind that it’s only accessible to snowshoers and cross-country skiers after snowfall.
If you’re up for an adventure, you’ll find the canyon nearly empty. It is such a different experience to the summer months. And your pictures will turn out extra pretty.
Monument Valley/Page
Fewer crowds and the crisp air make Monument Valley and Page (for Lake Powell and Antelope Canyon) amazing in winter. Sometimes you even get a bit of snow there – which looks so dreamy.
The unique rock formations get dusted with snow and it will create an almost surreal landscape, perfect for photography.
Also, it is low season for Antelope Canyon, so you can enjoy it without the masses of crowds – and the heat.

Flagstaff
Last but not least you’ll have to check out Flagstaff.
Flagstaff is Arizona’s winter wonderland! They have plenty of snow, and you can enjoy skiing at Arizona Snowbowl. If you are not into skiing, try sledding, or go exploring the charming mountain town.
The pine trees and snowy landscapes give it a cozy, alpine vibe. And of course, the hotels are absolutely leaning into it – and it will almost make you feel like you are in Switzerland instead!
Is Arizona Expensive in Winter?
Arizona can be a bit pricier in winter, especially in popular spots like Sedona and Flagstaff. These areas are popular for snowbirds (people escaping colder climates) and skiers. You might notice higher accommodation prices.
Some other spots like Antelope Canyon experience low-season, so you might get a good deal. The Grand Canyon is also a bit quieter, which makes it more affordable compared to summer.
Overall, it depends on where you go. Areas close to winter sports resorts might be more expensive, while other places might be cheaper.
All in all, Arizona is not as expensive as some other winter destinations in Colorado for sure.
Conclusion
To sum it up, Arizona is pretty awesome in winter. While you still enjoy mild temperatures in Tucson, you can see beautiful snowy landscapes in Flagstaff.
Popular spots like Monument Valley, Sedona, and North Rim look extra scenic with a small layer of snow contrasting the bright and earthy colors.
While Arizona might not be your first choice for a winter holiday, it does have a couple of really cool ski resorts. They are certainly less expensive than other places in the area, like Colorado.
